MRF sends urgent appeal to Ministry regarding battery fires
The Metal Recycling Federation (MRF) has issued an urgent letter to the Ministry, calling for action on the increasing problem of battery fires in the recycling industry. Lithium batteries ending up in recycling streams such as scrap metal pose a significant fire risk.

Despite all precautions taken by the sector, incidents continue to occur. MRF is urging the government to support the industry by implementing two specific measures: improving the visibility of lithium batteries and introducing a deposit system. These steps would reduce the number of lithium batteries discarded in scrap, and help ensure those that do end up there can be identified and removed.
