Sixty Years of Connecting and Looking Ahead

We proudly concluded our 60th anniversary on 31 October 2024 with the publication of Sixty Years with a Heart for Associations – Professional Collaboration: Reflections, Lessons, and Future Perspectives.

Six Decades in Blogs

A blog series reflecting on six decades of Lejeune Association Management. These blogs explore the development of professional association management, placing it within a historical and societal context, alongside:Four future scenarios for associations in 2030.A report on our anniversary congress. The jury report of the Mans Lejeune Award 2024.

First Copy

On 17 December, our Managing Director, Jules Lejeune, presented the first copy to none other than Peter Tack, the pioneer of professional association management thinking in the Netherlands and the creator of the Propeller Model. This model, with its focus on strategic positioning, collective structuring, and individual benefits, has inspired many and continues to serve as a guiding principle in our field today.Peter was visibly surprised and remarked:"This is an unprecedented and therefore unique piece of work. Spanning a 60-year timeline, it demonstrates that leading an association is both a skill and an art: the continuous development of professional expertise combined with an unwavering belief in collaboration. In each of the four challenging future scenarios with which Jules concludes his historical narrative, there will be a need for professionally managed associations.

With Gratitude

A special word of thanks to Lisanne Lejeune and Ria Luitjes for their tireless efforts in compiling this remarkable work, and to all the employees of Lejeune Association Management. Last but certainly not least, my dearest Helen Lejeune-van der Ben OLY. Thanks to you all, we are not only reflecting on 60 years of history but also looking ahead to a promising future.

Reactions to the Anniversary Boo

"Many thanks for the book Sixty Years of Lejeune—it is well put together! On to a hundred years!"

"I thoroughly enjoyed reading Sixty Years with a Heart for Associations. The first part provides a wonderful insight into post-war developments in the Netherlands, Europe, and the world. It was fascinating to read how your father, Mans, was already active internationally (in Europe) at an early stage and, in 1964, began supporting companies in the cardboard industry. The book offers a comprehensive overview of your company’s growth, the involvement of the entire family to this day, and of course, it also highlights the sporting side—a true hockey family. It may not be Bloemendaal, but HGC is certainly a club of distinction."

"This is already a classic and a must-read for every association professional. The historical context of how we have spent 60 years ‘connecting businesses and advancing industries’ provides valuable insight into how trade and professional organisations can further develop their role in the future. What stands out is that, in an era of increasingly fragmented politics, businesses and professionals play a key role in shaping and driving sustainability, innovation, well-being, prosperity, employment, and continuity. A remarkable field that deserves more attention and recognition."
